On March 23, 2009, Governor Charlie Crist signed a proclamation that recognizes April as STD Awareness Month in the state of Florida.  This gives you an indication on how severe the problem is here.  In Florida, there are 266 sexually transmitted diseases reported every day. That breaks down to 11 cases every hour or one case every 5.42 minutes (According to 2008 data).  It is important to remember those are only REPORTED cases, there are many that go unreported.  66% of reported cases occurred among individuals between the ages of 15-24.  The statistics for Miami-Dade are even more alarming:

• 1 in every 60 non-Hispanic white men
• 1 in every 98 Hispanic men
• 1 in every 49 African-American men
